The Crime Scene: How Forensic Science Works is a useful book for a wide range of readers from students to law enforcement professionals as an overview on the forensic process from crime scene to the courtroom. The authors provide information on forensic science that educates the readers on all aspects of forensic service that can be devoted to investigating a crime.

--Kevin Lothridge, CEO, National Forensic Science Technology Center

Forget CSI and 24! The Crime Scene: How Forensic Science Works tells the real story. This book is a fascinating look into the who, what, where, and why of crime scene evidence, including not just the science, but the psychology behind what can motivate or derail members of the crime scene team. I especially liked the real-life crime scene narrative that was featured
in every chapter. This followed an actual homicide from EMS to court case; the actual 'lessons' of the text were applied to this real case. I also found that the 'Frequently Asked Questions' seemed to cut right to the chase in terms of the chapter's main findings. Great text for students or anyone interested in this ever-evolving science. Five stars!

--Peter Grosett

This book has provided great insight into the techniques of forensic science. It is quite obviously written by an expert in the field who has seen many, many cases. No doubt that a reader will learn vast knowledge of the subject.

The Bureau of Forensic Services (BFS), Department of Justice of the State of California held four courses for a total of 80 criminalists on the ISO 17025 standards. These courses were delivered under contract with the Northeast Regional Forensics Institute (NERFI). The one week course "ISO/IEC 17025: 2005 Awareness Training" under Lead Instructor W. Mark Dale, MBA, and instructors Harold Peel, Ph.D., Murray Malcolm, M.S., and Donald Orokos, Ph.D., benefits from more than 80 years of accumulated experience of forensic experience and auditing for the leading accrediting bodies of forensic labs in the United States and Canada. Dr. Orokos' presentation on Uncertainty of Measurement introduces the subject in a methodical fashion that does justice to the integration of all demonstrable errors in a measurement.

In these times of increased scrutiny regarding the operating procedures of crime laboratories, the thoughtful and detailed examination of the ISO 17025 standards and the ASCLD/LAB-International Supplemental requirements for the accreditation of forensic science testing laboratories becomes arguably, necessary training for compliance. The course emphasizes participation by trainees based on their professional experience and in so doing brings out the implications of the forthcoming standards in a very real and practical way. Dale's leadership in the course is evident throughout as he effectively draws out the implications of a new era of internationally accepted standards for forensic agencies. The instructors are able to convey the material in a manner that draws a surprising degree of audience participation which helps make clear the connections between the ISO standards and in our case, the BFS Quality Management System.

The most reliable recommendation for this course comes from the students. It obtained high marks in many of the positive assessment criteria. Other agencies planning for ISO accreditation should consider this course a very valuable preparatory resource. They will not be disappointed.
